Well, right now I’m looking at my two daughters because my wife is currently travelling – but normal days for me are planned the night before and put into what we at ActionCOACH call a “default diary” (you can also get more information about default diaries on the web) – and this shows me what I have to do at different points during my day.
Everything for me is scheduled and organized, and I’m very particular about my time and how it is used, because it is the only resource (used or not) we don’t ever get back.
I arrive at my office at 8:30 and typically work until 4, and start my day updating Facebook and going through my email – many of which I delegate to my team to handle or to the proper department.
Then, I will meet with my team and try to stay out of the “details” as much as possible, although that can be hard for me at times. My role as CEO is more about leadership, inspiring my team, communication and strategic direction, and I have to rely more than ever on my team to step up and do the day-to-day implementation of our overall plan and direction.
Then, in the evening, I may spend a anywhere from two to four hours on the phone to Australia, where I can keep up with my businesses over there – knowing the end of my day is the start of the day in Oz.
The key, again, is planning beforehand. Every minute planning saves you on implementation many times over, and knowing what you need to do the next day allows your sub-conscious to work out ways to improve your productivity while you sleep – at least that’s what we’ve found to be true in our organization.
