If you mean physically sit down and write them, I have to admit I’m a terrible, two-fingered typist. But I’m a huge believer in leverage, and because my mouth has served me well over the years (or not so well, I suppose, based on who you speak to), I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some very accomplished and understanding editors who have allowed me to dictate a lot of my material to them, so they in turn can produce copy that I can then edit and revise – as I’m a better reader than typist.
I’ve actually found the dictation strategy to be very productive, and would recommend it to writers who have a difficult time typing or who are used to writing things out long-hand. All you need is a voice recorder (digital nowadays, and even the iPod has a device that allows you to record and store “voice memos”) and someone who can transcribe what you’ve narrated. It also allows you to “get into the zone” in terms of your own stories or examples – and since I’ve presented so many workshops and seminars over the years, it is a better format for me personally.
